Art inspiring

Here we show a selection of work produced by Charles Dickens School in Southwark. The work emerged from a literacy project which the school is involved in with the support of the Tate Gallery.

Ademola Akinlola, an artist, and Rachel Hills, a musician, have been working with the children to help them to explore imaginative ideas from chosen stories, legends and poems.
An Art Club was formed to work after school on the topic of River Images for this display.

'A bridge for all people: a bridge of kindness.'

It’s people coming to see what the bridge is like.
Melissa Stevens, aged 10 yrs
'The bridge speaks for the universe.'

I wanted to show that there are other worlds in the universe apart from this one.

'
The World famous tongue bridge.'

Two people silhouetted against the sunlight join tongues to form a bridge.
Below the bridge I painted different shades of water. Above the bridge is a cloud and on the cloud a castle and a green person risen from the earth. This part is a magical design to balance the painting.

'A solar bridge.'

Maybe there’s a place no one has ever seen before, and some day we might explore it. I painted a bridge which maybe, if it’s safe, people can travel wherever they want to go.
Sabrina Francis, aged 10 yrs
'Into the future - a rainbow over deep water.'

Out of her mind she thought of a bridge for the Millennium. She chose the colors for brightness and contrast.
Adepeju Popoola, aged 10 yrs
'A multi-mix for the Millennium.'

Thinks there are going to be good things, bad things, and in-between things about the Millennium. She wanted to show this in the picture. Mostly there are going to be good thoughts.
Terri Southlon, aged 10 yrs
'
A bridge for the new century.'

Was thinking, as she painted, of people dancing on the bridge celebrating the new century. It's getting darker, the sun is setting, and they’re having a good time.
Susan Nduoyo, aged 9 yrs
'
A mushroom bridge for the Millennium.'

Wanted to say that things can be different in the Millennium. There could even be crocodile bridges!
